WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE BOOKS FOR INDIVIDUALS?

One of my favorite books for men and their partners is I Don’t Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression. While it is a bit outdated now, I remember reading this book back in my early days of practice and I felt it did a fantastic job of discussing male shame and anger.

Trauma and Recovery is the seminal text on trauma and shows the parallels between public trauma like war or natural disasters and private trauma like sexual abuse. Although it is written clinically, the education provided is outstanding.

Many clients have told me that The Highly Sensitive Person felt like a window into their mind. After reading it, I completely understood why. For those who have been labeled as “too emotional” or “too sensitive,” this may be the book for you.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE BOOKS FOR COUPLES?

Most people know about The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts. I find it helps couples understand that they often speak a different language when it comes to love and many of their issues grow out of thinking their partner wants to be loved the same way they do.

Attached is a great introduction to the science of Attachment Theory and how it can affect your relationships.

If the Buddha Dated and If the Buddha Married are both great books on relationships for those interested in Eastern philosophies.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE APPS?

Both Headspace and Smiling Mind are great apps for those interested in mindfulness and meditation.

Freedom is an app I use for blocking out distractions and can help those with ADHD or anyone who struggles to focus. For those who grow better through gamification, Habitica (although not an app) is a fun website that turns To-Do lists into a role-playing game.

Day One Journal is my favorite app for journaling. It allows you to track moods, thoughts, images, and sound. It also provides helpful prompts. For those concerned about privacy, the app developers note it is encrypted.
